On Dropping Plates

August 23, 2018

Today I'm having "performance anxiety". It's Thursday and I've made myself and others a promise to get a new video out every Friday on our Farmhouse renovations or business ventures. Sometimes we have lots of video to choose from and other times, not so much.

It's not that I didn't try... because I did, but some weeks just lend themselves to better content. How do I make hanging a screen door interesting? It basically consists of resizing the door, putting two hinges on and letting it swing! How do I create a storyline out of that? Every story has an introduction, a building, a climax or problem and a resolution. Sometimes life is just steady and downright boring.

If people are going to give up 15 minutes of their week to watch us, I want to give them something worth watching. After all, you are only as good as your last show, or book, or article or blog post.

But life isn't like that is it? Sometimes we are interesting, sometimes dull. A comedian can have his off nights. A marriage is not all love and cuddles. Parenthood has it's joys and frustrations. Nothing is great all the time!

So as I sit here, procrastinating on looking at my footage for the week, I remind myself of this. I'm only human. I am one person not a television producer with a big team. I can only do what I can. I always promise to do the best with what I have in front of me, but sometimes I may not do that well.

This week was frustrating for me because I lost a whole day's worth of video. This video was my attempt to balance the mundane with fun - yet all the jollies were wiped out by one fickle SD card! But what can I do about it... nothing... and it's OK.

Every day has it's twists and turns, the good, the bad and the ugly. Quality of life has to do with how we manage all of those things. Creativity leans into the challenge of making the mundane interesting.

So today, remember, you don't have to be perfect! It's alright to drop a plate or two once in a while... in fact sometimes you may break the whole set in one day! But it doesn't matter, you really are not as good as your last success. Life is more complex than that. You are made up of many parts of many days and years. Today you may fail at one thing and succeed at another. We don't need to rate ourselves with stars and spots - just grace. So today, have a little grace for others and a big mixture for yourself. We are all doing the best we can!
