Aligning your Day
Ok, I have a confession to make. I'm having a hard day. What's going on? Really pretty much nothing. For the past few months I've been listening to multiple inspirational teachers speak about aligning your day. Start with deep breaths and then work on five minutes of gratitude. Engage in feelings of joy and you will start your day on a good note!
I know this is true - but here's what I did today. Last night after the Super Bowl, I decided to binge watch "Fear the Walking Dead" - yep - don't ask - I don't know why. I guess there's something about an apocalyptic tale that keeps me coming back. I'm looking for those happy endings. Unfortunately with each episode things tend to get worse until they leave you with the cliffhanger where you don't know how many of your favorite characters have joined the ranks of the dead.
So this morning I woke up and first thing thought "just one more episode"...which turned into three. I capped off the season with the most depressing finale yet and had another thought, "This is Us!" So, to get my mind off of the zombie apocalypse, I tuned in to watch the (SPOILER ALERT!!) dreaded fire and death of the perfect TV father, Jack. And, no surprise, it did me in!
Now I tend to get really caught up in movies or TV shows anyway. As a child, teen and young adult, I was addicted to quite a few Soap Opera's. I remember once my sister saying "they're our friends" and of course, that is how we feel about fictional characters when we've spent a great deal of time with them. I even saw a FB post about someone accidentally praying for the main characters one week. But we all know that no matter how realistic shows appear, it isn't real life!
But here is something that IS real life! Our feelings. I am sad today. Our emotions really don't know the difference between real and fake. Our physiology and our health takes a cue from our emotional well-being. People who are happy tend to live longer, healthier lives. Neuroscientists have been studying our brainwaves and the effects of stress on our bodies and what they are finding is that stress and sadness effect our health in a negative way.
Life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns. There are so many things we can't control. We get the good with the bad. When bad things happen, it's appropriate to grieve.
It's time to come full circle now. I got up today and made myself sad by watching these shows! I started my day as if I was protecting my children from constant danger or as if my husband died as a result of a fire. I even explained to my daughter that if the house burned down she needed to let the pets die instead of her father. REALLY?? Yes, I had that talk! And I've changed the batteries on my smoke detectors too!
Everything that happened in my day was imagined, none of it was real. Reality is that the sun is shining, I have a clean warm home, fires in the wood stove, food in the fridge and all is well. Today I am healthy. On this fine day, my daughter is sitting in a chair across from me, my pets are curled at my feet and my husband is gainfully employed and working in another room. On this day, my mom is alive and well, as are my siblings and their families. Today, life is good and I am grateful!
I feel better now!
